VA Aid & Attendance & Home Care: A Simple Guide for Northbrook Families

Daughter helping North Shore veteran review VA care benefit paperwork

If you’re caring for a veteran—or you are a veteran or surviving spouse—navigating support options can feel overwhelming. Many families across Chicago’s North Shore don’t realize that the VA Pension benefit, including Aid & Attendance, may help offset the cost of private-pay, non-medical home care.

At Comfort Angels Home Care, we work with families who pay privately, some of whom also use VA benefits as part of their overall financial plan. While we are not a VA-contracted provider and cannot determine eligibility, we help families understand what the process looks like and what type of documentation we can provide along the way.

What Is Aid & Attendance?

Aid & Attendance is an additional monthly amount that can be added to a VA Pension for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who need help with everyday activities.

For many families, this benefit provides the breathing room needed to ensure their loved one receives care at home while still remaining financially stable.

Who May Qualify?

While only the VA can determine eligibility, families often begin the process when a veteran:

  • Needs daily assistance with personal care

  • Has mobility limitations

  • Requires supervision for safety

  • Is a surviving spouse of a wartime veteran

Some families qualify even if they’ve never used VA benefits before.

How It May Help with Home Care Costs

Families who qualify for Aid & Attendance often use it to help cover:

Companion care & safety monitoring

Bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming

Meal preparation & hydration reminders

Light housekeeping & laundry

Medication reminders (non-medical)

Transportation to appointments

Respite care for family caregivers

How Comfort Angels Supports the Process

We keep things simple and clear:

  • Free phone consultation to understand your loved one’s needs

  • A care plan outlining services and frequency

  • Clean, detailed invoices often required for A&A documentation

  • Referrals to VA-accredited representatives or VSOs

We cannot guarantee approval—but we can make the care side of the process easy, dignified, and well-documented.

A Supportive First Step

If you would like to understand how home care fits into your loved one’s needs—and how families typically use Aid & Attendance—we’re here to help.

Let us guide you through the first steps with clarity and compassion.

Comfort Angels Home Care is a private-pay, non-medical home care agency and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We do not determine eligibility for VA benefits. Families are responsible for applying directly through the VA or an accredited representative.
